Acireale is a baroque town on the east coast of Sicily, 20 km above Catania. The city has beautiful sights such as churches, museums, theaters and squares. In the water you can see lava rocks rising out of the water. According to a legend, these are pieces of rock which the Cyclops Polyphemus (a monstrous creature from the caves of Mount Etna) Odysseus hurled at his head, because he had blinded the Cyclops. Along this coastline are still more villages, such as the fishing village of Aci Castello (5 km). The castle is situated above the sea, you can visit it. In the castle you can admire archaeological collections. But also a trip to the Etna should not be left out. On the south side of the volcano, you can rise with a cable car. Led by a guide, you can further continue the tour. For a day at the beach you can go to Aci Trezza (2 km). This village has a pebble beach and also you will find restaurants, a bank and a small supermarket. Do you prefer sand beneath your towel? At 14 km lies the sandy beach of Playa Catania.
